Experienced welders can find work in a wide variety of industries, from auto racing to bridge building and ship making--but the vast majority of jobs are in manufacturing.
Trade schools and welding schools offer coursework vital to advancement and welding certification, and many employers prefer to hire welders who've undergone formal training. Welding schools offer coursework in mechanical drawing, blueprint reading, and metallurgy. Additionally, trade schools better prepare students for American Welding Society certification. Welder schools also teach the basics of the various types of welding, such as MIG (metal inert gas), TIG (tungsten inert gas), and oxyacetylene torch. Welders who obtain bachelor's degrees or have years of experience and an excellent grasp of the technical aspects of the field may become welding engineers.
Skilled welders are always in demand, especially those trained in the latest technologies and with up-to-date certifications. Wages usually range from $10 to $25 per hour, depending on experience. Specialty welders, however, can earn much more. About 20 percent of welders in the U.S. belong to a labor union.
