Truck drivers deliver nearly all the goods shipped by ship, rail, or plane throughout the U.S. Long-haul drivers often plan their own routes after receiving a load of freight, a destination, and a deadline. Light or delivery drivers typically deliver goods within an urban area, while route drivers cover a pre-defined territory.
Drivers who transport more than 26,001 pounds of freight or operate oversize vehicles need a commercial driver's license (CDL). Training for a CDL can be obtained at ground transportation schools. These trade schools teach students how to safely maneuver large vehicles on city streets and highways. Ground transportation schools also teach drivers how to inspect freight and make sure their rigs comply with state and federal regulations.
Long-haul truckers have the most favorable job outlook, but the American economy in part dictates need. Wages for long-haul truckers range from around $12 to $30 an hour. Light delivery drivers average slightly less.
