Electricians install and perform maintenance on the electrical systems in homes, businesses, and factories. Most electricians focus on new construction or maintenance. Construction electricians install the wiring and conduit, and maintenance electricians keep the juice flowing.
There are two basic paths to become an electrician: Starting at the bottom and working your way up, or taking electrician classes at a vocational school. The latter path helps you advance faster and earn more pay. Electrician schools teach job site safety, electrical theory, and residential and commercial building wiring requirements. Trade schools also teach the principles of the National Electrical Code.
About 80 percent of electricians work in the construction industry, mostly with electrical contractors. As such, employment need fluctuates based on the American economy. Wages for apprentices are around $13 an hour, while top-flight journeymen earn close to $40 an hour. Nearly a third of electricians belong to a labor union.
